Tapulous Investor on "Casual Gaming ‘Explosion’"

If anyone of you readers out there own an Iphone/Ipod or any similar Apple products that are supposed to revolutionise the way we live, chances are you would have played 1 of the most popular games out there, the Tap Tap music game. It is an easy game to learn, and its fun to play. All you are supposed to do is to tap on the available spaces when your music note hits it. While browsing through the web, I stumbled upon an interview with the investor of Tapulous (Jeff Clavier). He made an interesting statement about the growth of the number of casual gamers.

Tapulous is behind the popular Tap Tap music games for the iPhone and other devices in a fast-growing and lucrative area known as casual, or social, gaming. Here are the extract of the interview:

Q: The casual gaming space is very lively and interesting these days. What is your assessment of this market?
A: We’re seeing an explosion of social games on Facebook and on Apple distribution platforms. Suddenly, games are the premium place for people to interact. What’s really fascinating with this new wave of social games is the wide footprint they’ve built, in terms of gamers. I was on a plane from Paris recently. Everyone on the plane was playing with iPads and iPhones. Just killing time. It’s so seamless. It’s so good. Everyone is walking around with a computer on them now, and it’s broadening the popularity of games. It’s taken off in a way no one thought of, because games are so integrated with all other platforms.

Q: What are games going to be like a few years from now?
A: One thing I’m seeing is the mix of [a user’s] location and intent. I think you’ll be seeing more games with real-life elements, games that direct people’s behavior. Like the “check-in” mechanism. What’s clear is that more will be done on the iPhone. As you get a better camera, you will be able to use your eyes more. You will be able to get your face embedded into games [as an avatar]. But everything will have to be within the confines of a normal battery life. To do this stuff, you need serious firepower.

With the inevitable growth of casual gamers, it will ensure that the gaming industry will continue to grow strong. This is an important element to ensure that E-Sports and gaming will remain growing strong as well.
