Srs Biz: Why Pros Will Always Be Pros

Have you ever wonder why does certain players always win when they joined a tournament? What makes this group of people better than the other players? Why they can dominate every year? Today we gonna discuss why the pros will always be pros.

Hand vs Brain

Most gamers play games with skills. When they play with someone else, they will always do things that they are good at. For example, a FIFA player who likes to do crossing will always play a crossing game because that is his most effective method of scoring.

But Pros play games with their brain. When they play with a player who is good at crossing, instead of playing the same style as the player, he will 1st analyze how to defend the players crossing. Once he has analyze how to block the crossing, he then analyze the defending style of the player. If he found out that the player like to pressure in defend, he will then play a slow build up game to lure the player to make mistakes and punish him with a goal or a two.

That is the difference between Pros & normal player. They play with their brain.

Quantity vs Quality

Most gamers believe that in order to be better, you gotta put a lot of hours into training. An average of 6-10 hours is usually the standard of a good training. But the funny thing is, this player have no idea how to train. They still keep on practicing the same old thing or wasting time by playing with a weaker player because it feels good to win. Even if they play with the Pros, they never understand why they lost and just accept the fact the they can never beat the Pros. Well maybe once or twice if they are lucky.

But Pros train differently. Instead of practicing by the hours, they practice to discover the secret of the games, to refine their skills & to minimize their weakness. This is also the reason why most Pros are always seen as an All Rounder. Although it is good to put a few hours into practicing, but this Pros make use of the time they have even if its just 1 hour - 2 hours a day. In practice, they are always indulging themselves in what we call Drills. An example of a drills is practicing how to throw a bomb effectively in Counter Strike 1.6 or how to find the best way to escape in a gang bang situation in DOTA. They will only do this in Drills. It is a boring way to practice but it is the most effective way to learned about the game.

And that is the difference between Pros & normal player. Their training is boring but produce the best outcome. Well maybe it is not that boring when you manage to discover something cool that others dont know about.

Money vs Glory

Most gamers join tournaments because of the prizes. If the prizes is not that lucrative, well we can roughly assume that there wont be many players who would join the tournament. But the saddest part is when most gamers dont want to join tournaments with big names in it. Thats the reason why Amateur Tournament has been created for this people who are afraid of challenges. But do you know that most of this so called "Amateur Team" are consist of players who have play the games for ages and still fail every year?

Where else Pros join tournament for a bigger reason than the prizes, its all about winning. Its all about proving to everyone that they are the best in what they do. Its all about becoming no.1. The prizes is not a big issue. They are more concern if there are no more good players around that they can play with and beat them. When they lost, they will learn from their mistake and move forward. When they win, they will enjoice in this glory of beating the best in the industry. Glory is everything to them

And again that is the difference between Pros & normal player. Money is not the issue. Glory is.

Excuses vs Acceptance

Most gamers like to find excuses when they lost. Even when things are done in the fairest way, they will still think that it is not. They will complain of match fixing, bracket fixing and other things which it just doesnt make sense to others, but make sense to them. Today is quite uncommon to have common sense. Because if they do have common sense, then they would have realize that they lost because well sorry to say you just sux at it.

Where else Pros doesnt look for excuses. The 1st thing they ask themselves is "Why did i lost?" "What went wrong?" "What was my mistake?". Pros analyze their lost before even think of any other outside reason to blame on. Thats why they will always get better and better because every time they lost, they ask the right question, they learned from their mistake and become a better player in the future.

And yea thats the difference between Pros & normal player. They are not kids.

So have you ever wonder why there are a few people in Malaysia that can be considered as Pros? Because most gamers play with their hand, spend so many hours on practicing useless things, only play because of the money, run away in big shots tournament and give 1001 excuses why they lost. The worst are those who give 1001 excuses when ask "Hey why dont you join this tournament?"

So the choice is in your hands now. Its pretty clear on how to be like the Pros. Sounds easy right. Then why are you still a noob?

The money vs Glory argument is highly arguable. Not many people would want to invest that much time in a game to not get something good out of it. In the case of DotA, China players are so fearful because they train so much just to win that 5000 dollars in prize money which to team is a lot. While I believe that Glory motivate some people to play better. I dont think that there is a clear distinction as to which is more important. I believe they are on par with each other. Or better yet, use both to motivate you.

@arroyos: Thx! Maybe you can share with our readers on your personal exp base on the above title ^^

@MrBlue: Basically Money should not be the main priority as it will cloud your judgment and harm the spirit of e-Sports. What if there is a match fixing offered by 3rd party going on? If Money remains as the main motivator then wouldnt it ruin the game in the end?

And i agree that one of the best way to motivate is through both ways. But wouldnt Money follow Glory? ^^

Agreed with Arroyos, well said jali.. really a nice article with full of facts! Imma gonna share on FB too! XD

On the Money vs Glory, maybe it sounds better if Money was to change to Prize.. who doesn't wanna win the prize of representing Msia to compete overseas right? It's true not only 1 thing that solely motivates the gamers, so to me it should be 75% of Glory and 25% of Prize! =D

alex : thats glory not money, glory to represent malaysia and be named no.1.. money in terms of getting it for "free" to fly there

look at the big picture, jali is trying to say that glory is the thing that ppl are joining big tournaments for and money dont play a bigger role than that here.. even if there's a tournament with RM50k for 1st prize alot of people still wont be joining just because they are scared of the big names out there or they think they are not capable to do it, so that comes back to glory, if u want the glory to beat the big names you will be joining.. money or prize like u said, is just a bonus in the end :)
Show Me Ze Money!

Money can also be argued as "Return Of Investment". Basically most gamers wont join tournament if:

1. They cant win the money
2. The reg fee is unjustifiable by the cash prize(poor organizer)
3. As time goes by, money is an issue to survive yourself

Many gamers have decided to retire mostly because of this reason, the inability to support oneself through playing games. Remember, the true meaning of e-Sports is: Earn a living by playing games.

Still in Malaysia, the effort that u put into gaming does not justify the amount of money u receive in the end which is a sad true case. But that shouldnt stop u from playing. At least get a job to support yourself and practice when u have the time.

In the end, it is those people who play for Glory that will cont playing where else those who are looking to make a profit will quit.

Ultimately, we want a Glory motivated community rather than Money motivated community ^^
